Football Leagues

Football leagues - our boys played their 9-a-side football league matches on Friday October 11th in the community pitch. The boys had trained well and were ready for action! Tineterriffe was our first match but unfortunately our lads found it a tough battle with Tineterriffe getting the win. Our second game was against Oola and it was back and forth right through the game until the very end. Oola kicked the last score to win by one point after our boys had gone in front just a few minutes before. Finally, we played against a very good Bilboa and it was evenly balanced going into the second half. Bilbao managed to push on and win by a few goals but the boys showed fantastic determination, commitment and never stopped trying.

The girls played in the 7-a-side football league on Monday October 14th also in the community pitch. We were in a group with Murroe, Nicker and Oola. First up was the game against Murroe. The girls showed great team-work and skill levels and won this game comfortably. Game two saw us play against Nicker. It was a more evenly contested game but the Caherelly girls remained patient and put what they had practiced in training in motion to eventually achieve the deserved victory. Our last game was against Tineterriffe in the semi-final and the girls didn’t seem to be too tired and were really looking forward to the game.

We have been very busy with GAA so far this year in Caherelly N.S. Our girls and boys have been participating in weekly football sessions with coach Matthew on Wednesdays, in the yard from Juniors to 4th; and the community pitch for 5th and 6th Class. The children have really enjoyed having Matthew in teaching them new skills in football.

Our school has also played plenty of matches in both camogie and football for the girls’ teams and football for the boys’ team. The girls started the year off for us with a camogie blitz in Na Piarsaigh GAA club on Friday September 13th. This was a very successful day for the girls as, while they were beaten in their opening game against a very strong Ballybrown team, they bounced back in style, beating Gaelscoil an Raithín, Parteen N.S. and Crecora, to reach the ‘A’ Plate Final against Cratloe. We were very competitive against Cratloe but they proved a tough opponent and deservedly got their win. The girls were full of smiles on the way home, with a trip to the shop a nice way to end our day.

As well as coaching sessions with Matthew, lots of the children from 4th Class up to 6th attended weekly football training sessions during their lunchtime in the community pitch. It was particularly nice to see children who do not play with a club outside of school giving their all during training. Mar a deirtear ‘mol na hóige agus tiocfaidh siad’ and ‘strength in numbers’.
