Built in 1955 as a two teacher mixed school, we now have five class teachers and two full-time SETs (Special Education Teachers).

There are a few different interpretations as to the origin of the name Caherelly. The most popular is a translation from the Irish
Cathair Ailbhe. Ailbe is the patron saint of the Diocese of Cashel and Emly and it is believed once had a church in Caherelly.

Ailbe lived in the sixth century and is well remembered and commemorated by having many institutions called after him.

Another interpretation of the name Caherelly is that it translates from Cathair Aili meaning The Stone Fort or The Rocky Place. Another possible meaning isCathair Eille the fort of the Eille.

Caherelly School is situated in its present location since 1955.
The previous location of the school was where the Parish Hall now stands. Records show that land was generously donated for the building of a school in 1838 and the ordinance survey map of 1840 clearly shows a school.

We can assume therefore that our
Caherelly School has been in existence for over 170 years. Our school registers date back to 1860 listing the hundreds of pupils who have attended the school down the years.
