Literacy Lift-Off

We are delighted to announce that we have introduced our Literacy Lift-off Programme in Caherelly N.S. with First Class and Senior Infants this year.  Thanks to the generosity of the Parents Council the school has purchased an initial supply of PM readers.  PM Readers are specifically graded, highly intensive readers but also expensive!  We could not have done this without the support of our Parents Committee, teachers and parents. Our school is grateful to all who contributed their time and hard-earned money to our worthy cause.

What is Literacy Lift-off?
Literacy Lift-Off, also known as “Power-Hour or “Guided Reading" is an intensive programme of Reading and Writing, which gives the pupils lots of opportunities to read books at their own level of competency. It gradually lifts the complexity of what they can do in both reading and writing. Pupils on the programme will progress up through the levels at their own rate.

Literacy Lift-off is implemented in blocks of 6/8weeks.  Pupils are assessed and grouped according to their reading ability prior to the commencement.  Diverse activities are essential for extending literacy processing power. The PM readers are at the core of the programme.  Children will also work on writing, phonics and high frequency words.  The pupils work in stations to carry out a number of activities in reading and writing, under the guidance of teachers and Special Needs Assistants.
They will have daily sessions and each child will take a new book home each night.

What part will parents play?

**The aim would be to change the book every day so it is very important that your child gets the practice of reading their new book each night at home.
  • Listen to your child reading the story aloud.
  • After reading, ask you child to retell the story in the correct sequence, giving as many details as possible. * Retelling and summarising is just as important as the reading.
  • Ask your child questions about the pictures and the story.
  • Encourage them to predict, e.g. 'What do you think will happen next?'
  • Encourage them to read between the lines, e.g. 'Why do you think...?', 'How do you know that....?  'What would happen if.....?'
