Well done to Alannah Culhane, Amy O'Brien, Órla Ryan and Shane Heffernan, our four sixth class pupils who represented us in the East Limerick boys and girls football teams.

Sarsfield Cup  and Larkin Shield East Limerick Football Teams

By Shane Heffernan

In October I went to the Sarsfield Cup trials.  This is a Gaelic football team picked from East Limerick schools.  Boys from East schools go to trials for three weeks and the selectors pick the best talented twenty players. The trials were on in Murroe at half three on a Wednesday evening.  I was nervous because I really wanted to get on the team.  My Mom encouraged me and told me to do my best.

There were 72 boys at the trial the first week.  The next week, there were 52, then they cut it down to 34 for the third week and finally the team of 20 was made.  An email came to the school to let us know I was picked, I felt so happy.

We had a training session, then we played Doon Secondary school 1st year.  I made lots of friends from others schools.  Last Tuesday we played West Limerick. If we won we would have been in a final in the Gaelic Grounds.

The final was between the Limerick City and West Limerick, the final is in the Gaelic Grounds.

Well done to the Limerick City team who won on the night defeating Limerick West by 1-6  to 1-1.

Alannah, Órla and Amy from 6th class were selected to be on the girls East Limerick team.  They got to the final against the West Limerick and were beaten in a very tight game.

Our boys and girls from 3rd and 4th classes took part in the *Futsal games in Galvone in November.  It was a great day for them and a chance to try out something new.

*Futsal is five-a-side soccer and the aim of the programme is to increase and sustain participation at all ages and ability levels by promoting and developing the game as a complementary format of football within the football family. The game allows players to improve their technical skills as it requires quick thinking and rapid decision making facilitating the development of overall football “intelligence”.

As we do every year, the boys and girls from 5th and 6th classes took part in two football competitions, Cumman na mBunscol and INTO mini-7's.  All pupils who were interested took part in training after school with Mr. Kennedy, Mrs. Ryan and Mrs. McGuinness.
The girls team did very well this year and were fortunate to make it to both finals.  The Cumman na mBunscol final took place before the Halloween break in Páirc na nGael against a strong Garrydoolis team.  They played their hearts out and came away with the trophy.
The INTO final has yet to be played.

Our boys were not so fortunate this year but there is always next year!

In the first term of this school year, pupils from 2nd to 6th class take part in tag rugby each Friday with Kenneth McNamara.  They always look forward to these lessons and it is a great chance for our pupils to take part in another sport.
